Ottawa Public Library (OPL) is seeking public feedback on proposed commemorative names for three program rooms at Alta Vista, Beaverbrook, and Sunnyside branches.
In accordance with OPL’s Commemorative Naming Policy, this consultation recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the community.
How to Participate
Submit your comments by email to Board@BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca by June 12.
Feedback will be summarized and included in the public record for review by OPL staff and Board trustees.
Proposed Names
- Allan Higdon Room – Alta Vista Branch (Ward 18)
To recognize Allan Higdon’s civic contributions, including his service as an OPL trustee and his support for literacy and the arts.
- Joan Dodsworth-Ware Room – Beaverbrook Branch (Ward 4)
To honour Kanata’s first librarian and former Chief Librarian, Joan Dodsworth-Ware, for her leadership in advancing public library service.
- Giovanna Panico Room – Sunnyside Branch (Ward 17)
To celebrate Giovanna Panico’s impact on Ottawa’s Italian community and her long-standing support for literary and cultural initiatives.

Commemorative naming reflects OPL’s role in preserving community memory and recognizing local leadership in literacy, learning, and culture.
